Stamped concrete, also known as patterned or imprinted concrete, is one of the most versatile decorative paving systems available today. It combines the durability of traditional concrete with the aesthetic appeal of natural stone, brick, or wood—at a fraction of the cost.

What Is Stamped Concrete?

Stamped concrete is created by pressing patterned molds into freshly placed concrete before it hardens. The surface is colored using dry-shake color hardeners, and release agents are applied to prevent the stamps from sticking while adding depth and visual contrast. The result is a durable, low-maintenance surface that mimics natural materials with remarkable realism.

Step 1: Concrete Preparation

The success of any stamped concrete project begins with proper site preparation and concrete placement. The concrete should be poured, screeded, and bullfloated to achieve a level surface.

Key requirements:

  • Concrete should be poured without fly ash for optimal color absorption

  • Minimum compressive strength: C25 (25 MPa)

  • Minimum thickness: 5 cm (2 inches)

  • Thorough vibration and compaction to eliminate air pockets

Step 2: Color Hardener Application

Color hardener is applied to the concrete surface before initial setting. The application window is critical—the concrete must be firm enough to support the hardener without sinking, but still plastic enough to allow integration.

Application Procedure:

First Application (2/3 of total):

  • Evenly broadcast 2/3 of the required hardener (2 kg/m²) over the surface by hand or with a small trowel

  • Allow the hardener to absorb moisture from the concrete (approximately 15-20 minutes)

  • Perform initial floating with a steel trowel to work the material into the surface

Second Application (remaining 1/3):

  • Broadcast the remaining 1 kg/m² perpendicular to the first application direction to ensure even coverage

  • Perform a second floating pass

Third Application (if needed):

  • Spot-treat any areas with uneven color

  • Complete final floating to achieve uniform surface coloration

Note: A minimum of 2-3 separate applications with floating after each is required for optimal results. The color hardener not only provides the base color but also increases surface strength and durability.


Step 3: Color Releaser Application

Once the concrete has reached initial set, it's time to apply the color releaser. Perform the finger test: press your finger into the concrete surface—if it leaves a clear impression without sticking or sinking, the timing is right.

Application:

  • Evenly broadcast color releaser at 0.15 kg/m² across the entire surface

  • Apply uniformly—this material serves two purposes:

    1. Prevents stamping mats from sticking to the concrete

    2. Creates accent color in the stamped impressions, adding visual depth and contrast

Critical timing note: Application that is too early will cause the releaser to sink into the concrete; too late and it will not adhere properly. Consult BES technicians for specific guidance based on your site conditions.


Step 4: Stamping (Imprinting)

This is where the surface transforms from plain concrete into decorative stone, brick, or wood patterns.

Procedure:

  • Place rubber stamping mats onto the concrete surface

  • Apply firm, consistent downward pressure across the entire mat area

  • Stamp once—do not reposition or re-stamp (re-stamping distorts the pattern)

  • Work systematically: "from the edges inward, from patterns to straight lines"

  • Ensure uniform pressure across all stamps for consistent texture depth

Stamped concrete can replicate natural stone, brick, and tile with remarkable fidelity. The texture depth should be at least 3 mm for a convincing natural appearance.


Step 5: Curing and Hardening

After stamping is complete, the concrete must be allowed to cure properly.

Curing period:

  • Minimum 2-3 days of undisturbed curing (extend for lower temperatures)

  • Protect the surface from:

    • Foot traffic

    • Heavy loads

    • Water pooling

    • Freezing conditions

During this period, the concrete gains strength and the stamped pattern becomes permanently set.


Step 6: High-Pressure Washing

After curing, residual release agent must be removed to reveal the full color contrast.

Procedure:

  • Allow 3-7 days of curing before washing

  • Use a high-pressure washer to remove surface release agent residue

  • Critical: Ensure uniform washing across the entire surface—inconsistent washing will result in uneven color tones


Step 7: Sealer Application

The sealer is the final protective layer that locks in color, enhances appearance, and extends the lifespan of your stamped concrete.

Timing:

  • The concrete surface must be completely dry and white before sealing

  • This typically requires at least one full day of drying after washing

  • For best results, full concrete curing (28 days) is recommended before sealing

Application:

  • Apply at 0.2 kg/m²

  • Use roller or spray application methods

  • Avoid application in direct sunlight or during the hottest part of the day

  • Apply when slab temperature will be falling for 3-4 hours after application
